BLOGMAS Day 6: Single during the holiday season

Hello everyone!

It's that time of blogmas where I need to talk about something that a lot of us are probably going through... being single at Christmas!*
It's a tough time for all us singletons out there, but there are a few upsides to the single life at this time of year!

1. Choosing the movie: You can choose the Christmas movie that you want to watch. And you can watch it while being a fat mess eating all the crappy food you can find without trying to impress your other half!

2. Eating all the food: You can eat all the Christmas food and chocolate and biscuits that there has ever been without having to share them with that 'special someone!' What's not to love about that?

3. Kisses under the mistletoe: You can kiss whoever happens to be under that mistletoe without worrying the boyf (or girlf) and making them all jealous!

4. Money saver: Let's face it, the best part about being single at Christmas time is the fact that you don't have to buy him or her a present! Think of all the money you can save!!!!

What do you think are the perks of being single at Christmas?

Until next time.

BLOGMAS Day 5: The tree is up!

Hello everyone!

Day 5 is here and it's a very special one! WE PUT UP OUR TREE TODAY!! :D
This is my favourite time of the lead up to Christmas, when we all get together as a family, Christmas music blaring and wearing Christmas attire (well, at least I was!) and put up the tree.
Instead of writing up a big boring blog post about the process of putting up the tree, because I'm sure you're all well aware of how to do that, I thought I would just share some pictures of some of my favourite decorations on the tree!

A bare tree waiting to be decorated....

 Our little fam <3

This is a Christmas decoration from my Grandad's Christmas tree that was bought the Christmas before my mam moved out of her family home.

Have you put up your tree yet?

Until next time.

BLOGMAS Day 4: Surviving this horrible weather...

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to day four of blogmas!
No, you're not reading that wrong... And no, I didn't forget to upload a post yesterday...
I was running on 8 hours sleep over 2 days and to be honest, I was hungover (shock, horror! I'm a 20 year old college student.. of course I'm going to be hungover on a weekday!) and I tried to write a blog post about pantos, but it just wasn't sounding right at all and I didn't want to post just for the sake of it... So instead, I promise to have a video up as well as a blog post next Thursday/Friday!

And now, on to today's blog post!

The weather in Ireland at the moment is absolutely horrible! It's cold and windy and rainy and just plain disgusting. I hate this weather, especially when I have to walk to work!
However, the upside of this weather is how cosy I feel when I'm inside my house in my pyjamas beside the fire, or tucked up in bed. It kind of feels like Christmas, especially when the decorations are up (which they aren't yet... but keep an eye out for tomorrow's post ;)).
If you're like me and hate cold, miserable weather, there are a few things you can do to survive!

1. Wrap up: If you're brave enough to head out in the wind and rain and cold, then wrap up well! Wear your biggest coat, zip it up, throw on a scarf, wear a hat, bring a pair of gloves! Just don't catch a cold!

2. Bath time: After coming in from being out in that weather, run a hot bath for yourself and just submerge in the warmth of the water and relax. Trust me, it's the best thing ever!!

3. Light the fire: And some candles! You'd be surprised with the amount of heat that can come out of those little tea lights if you light enough!

4. Stay in: This one is very unrealistic because obviously you're going to have to go outside at some stage, but a girl can dream right?

That's it for today folks! I'm off to tidy my room and get ready to decorate it. Who knows, there might be a blog post coming your way very soon with a little room tour ;)

What's the weather like where you live? Any tips on how to survive it?

Until next time.

BLOGMAS Day 2: Fun things to do this holiday season!

Hello everyone!

Today, I thought that I would give you all some fun ideas of things you can do this holiday season to get you into that festive spirit! Some of these things cost some dollars (or euros...or pounds...whatever your currency is...I just ruined it...) and other things cost you nothing! So let's get started....

1. Ice Skating: One of my favourite things to do with a group of friends around this time of year is to go ice skating! I have been ice skating every December for the last three years - last year I even went twice! It is so much fun and gets you into that festive spirit with the Christmas music and Christmas jumpers and just the festive feel of skating on ice! You feel like you're in a Christmas movie! And with a group of friends, the experience is so much fun.

2. Visit a Christmas market: With so many Christmas markets around these days, I'm sure you're bound to stumble across one in a town close to you. For me, this Christmas market is the one in Galway which has been running since 2009. It is so magical to walk through the market and smell all the different foods, look at the homemade decorations and just feel like you're in a different world! Grab a luxury hot chocolate and walk around between the stalls to feel all special kinds of Christmassy!

3. Buy a Christmas jumper/pyjamas: A Christmas jumper is my essential Christmas wardrobe. That's right, I said wardrobe... No matter what's going on that day, where I'm going or what I'm wearing on bottom, I will have a Christmas jumper on! And every night, I have a pair of warm, fluffy, cosy Christmas pyjamas and slippers on. It's just an essential part of Christmas...get with it....

4. Visit family and friends: Possibly the simplest yet most difficult thing you can do this Christmas is to visit your family or arrange to meet up with friends you haven't seen in a while. It's the season for love and friendship, so try to make it your business to pop over to your auntie or your grandparents with a box of chocolates or some freshly baked goods for a cuppa and a catch up. You're sure to feel in that festive spirit, especially if they have their tree up!

5. Watch a Christmas movie: Whether it's super Christmassy like Elf or mildly festive like Love Actually, watching any form of a Christmas movie is sure to put you into that festive spirit! Make yourself a hot chocolate, get into those Christmas pyjamas, light a few candles (maybe a Christmas scented one), stick on the fire and cosy up on the couch with a blanket and settle in for the night with your favourite Christmas movie!

6. Listen to Christmas music: All day, every day! This is something that I have been doing since November 1st, and I am not ashamed! I have my playlist on Spotify but I've also been listening to Christmas FM. This is a special Christmas radio station in Ireland (which can be streamed worldwide from their website!) that is run by volunteer radio DJs, all in aid of charity! This year's charity is for the Make a Wish foundation and all money made by requests and texts and donations go straight to this wonderful charity! This is a tradition that my parents and I have every year. Once it starts to air at the end of November until it finished on the 26th December, we have it playing in the house and the car, getting into the festive spirit!!

And there we have it! Just a few ideas of different things you can do this Christmas season to get into the festive spirit!
Do you do anything special to get into the festive spirit?

Until next time.

BLOGMAS Day 1: Christmas Shopping Essentials

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the first day of BLOGMAS! :D
I am super excited for the next 24 days of blog writing, especially when they all involve my favourite time of year!

As it's the first of December, I thought that I would share with you all what I think are the most important things you need when you go Christmas shopping. If, like me, you like to be super organised and get your Christmas shopping done at the beginning of the month, then you are more than likely going to go some time this week! So here we go... what I would bring with me when I'm heading out for a day of Christmas present shopping...

1. Make a list: And I don't mean like Santa's 'Naughty or Nice' list... Before I go shopping for Christmas presents, I make a list of the people I need to buy for and some ideas for each person. This is just so I don't forget anyone and it also makes Christmas shopping that less bit stressful.

2. Plan a budget: Christmas can be a very expensive time of year, and if you're a student like me, then budgeting before going gift shopping might be a good idea! I take out whatever money I think that I'll need and place it in a separate place in my purse, away from the money I may need for food and travel throughout the day. I find that this helps me a lot, because I'm not using my card to pay for everything so I can see how much money I have left.

3. Dress warm: And comfortable! If you're going to be walking around all day from shop to shop, make sure that you are dressed appropriately! I generally wear a pair of leggings and a Christmas jumper (just to get into that festive spirit!) with a pair of comfortable shoes. I always bring a hat and a scarf with me along with a good coat in case I don't stay in a shopping centre and need to walk outside!

4. Bring a bottle of water and a snack: Throw a good size bottle of water into your bag to keep hydrated throughout the day. All that walking and being cramped in busy shops can make very thirsty work. So instead of looking for a small shop that sells water and wasting valuable shopping time, have a bottle on hand at all times! Also, a small snack won't go a miss either. Maybe a cereal bar or an apple, just something small you can throw into your bag and munch on in between shopping and lunch.

5. Don't stress out: The worst thing you can do when Christmas shopping is to get stressed! Stressing out when you're in a small enclosure or a packed shop is absolutely horrible, so if this happens (because it more than likely will!) leave the shop and find somewhere where you can sit down and take a break. If it doesn't get better, just give up for the day and try again another day!

So that's it for today guys!
Do you have any tips for when you go Christmas shopping?

Until next time.

Update: NEW Social Media, BLOGMAS & Plans for the Future!

Hello everyone!

I just thought I would give you all an update on what's to come on this blog! I have some very exciting news for the upcoming holiday season, as well as plans for the future of this blog!

But before we get on to all of that, I have set up a Snapchat for all things Just Fifs! Just add 'justfifs' or do the fancy photo -magic thingy below to keep up to date with blog posts and YouTube videos!

And now onto the exciting stuff....
I have decided that I am going to attempt BLOGMAS! This means a new blog post from the 1st of December all the way up to Christmas Eve EVERYDAY!! That's 24 new blog posts over the next three weeks! I love the Christmas season (I've been listening to Christmas songs since November 1st!) and all things leading up to it, so I thought that I would share it all with you here. It's like Vlogmas that some YouTubers do, but it's in blog format obviously! Some blog posts will be linking up to YouTube videos, so be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already!
I have already started planning some blog posts, which range from decorating the tree, to Christmas baking, to what I did that day! Keep your eyes peeled come the 1st of December! (See that little box to the right that says 'Subscribe'? Pop your email address in and you'll be notified when I put up a new post!!)

(image found on google images... i.e. I do not own it!!)

My second bit of 'news' is what I have planned for the future of Just Fifs.
As some of you know, Just Fifs doesn't stop at this blog. It goes on to a YouTube channel that I started back in July. I may not have a lot of subscribers yet, but that doesn't stop me from posting videos and enjoying every second of it!
I plan to make this little community much more public in the next few weeks. But before I do that, I need to redesign my blog. And this is where you can come in...
If you, or someone you know, is any good at designing blogs and would like to help me out, please please PLEASE let me know! I'll leave the Just Fifs official email below.

And that is everything!
I hope you are all as excited for Christmas as I am!

Panic Attacks and Anxiety - What I do in that situation....

Hello everyone!

This is a bit of a tough post to write, but it's one that I've been meaning to do for a while. As you may or may not know, I suffer from panic attacks and mild anxiety. The last few weeks I have been free of these pains in the ass (that is literally the only way I can describe them..) and everything was good. This weekend, I had a panic attack while I was at a friend's house after a night out, and then this evening at work I had an anxiety attack after a customer shouted at me.

Both of these occurrences forced me to deal with the attacks on my own, as there was no way to get help from anyone else. So I decided that I would tell you what I do when I get into these situations, in hope of helping at least one of you.

1. Breathe: I know this one probably has you all going 'well, duh!' but seriously, if you've never had a panic/anxiety attack, then you won't know how tough it can be to get your breathing under control. I just take some deep breaths, in through my nose and out through my mouth. If you can get your breathing under control, then you will be able to think more clearly.

2. Take a minute to yourself: If I'm with a group of friends or with my family, I just walk away when I feel the attack coming on. I take a minute to myself in the bathroom or down in my bedroom to calm down.

3. Go outside: If possible I'll go outside to get some fresh air. Surprisingly, this helps really well because I can take my deep breaths in the fresh air and also cool down.

4. Drink some water: A big glass of ice cold water works wonders when I'm having an attack! Taking big, slow gulps of the water helps so much because I can control my breathing while doing so.

5. Picture your anxiety/stress: This is a new thing that I've been trying. When I read Zoella's book 'Girl Online,' one of the characters mentioned trying to picture your anxiety/stress as a shape, give it a colour and eventually watch it disappear. I tried this today and I pictured a blue circle until it got lighter in colour and became as small as a polka dot. I was shocked to discover just how well this worked!

6. Talk to someone you trust: The final thing I do if all else fails is talk to someone who understands the panic attacks and anxiety. I have one person for this and they have always been there for me when I needed them. All it takes is a short conversation with them, over the phone or in person, for me to calm down.

Do any of you have any tips for dealing with anxiety and panic attacks?

Just remember to keep calm and it's not the end of the world if something like this happens!

Until next time.

Zoella's 'Girl Online' - What it meant to me

Hello everyone!

When I was in Dublin today, I ventured into Easons (or is it Eason??) on O'Connell Street and I finally bought the debut novel by Ms. Zoe Sugg herself, 'Girl Online.' And wow!

I went into Starbucks to waste an hour of waiting for my bus and started reading. I walked to the bus station and while I was waiting for fifteen minutes, I kept reading. I'm still on the bus (and it's a two and half journey!) and I literally just finished the book! This is definitely a record for me - starting and finishing a book in less than 4 hours! What an achievement! (Give yourself a pat on the back there Aoife.. Thanks Aoife!)

I was going to review the book, but there's not much I can say about it without ruining the story! Except for all the emotions it made me feel - I was happy, I was sad, I laughed, I even had tears in my eyes at one point. But it has also given me this new found confidence.

This blog, like Penny's, was something I started for myself way back at the beginning of June. Since that first post, I have had almost 3000 pageviews, discovered a love for photography and writing, started a YouTube channel and have become a lot happier! Not a lot of my friends or family or people I went to school with know about any of this, but I think I am finally ready to set this blog out into the world!

Zoella has always been an inspiration to me (she's one of the reasons I started all of this in the first place!) and now her book has given me this boost of confidence and excitement about making my blog more public. I definitely related to all the characters in the book - Penny for her anxiety and fear of her blog going public, Noah for his love of music and all things quirky, Elliot for his love of fashion and just wanting to be understood, even Megan for her love of drama and theatre (although I'm not that much of a bitch to people I call my friends, I hope!) - and it's not often that a book can do that to me. I've never related to any character in any book I've read (and trust me, that's been a lot!) so to feel this connected to four characters in one book was insane!

I cannot wait to read the sequel ('Girl Online: On Tour') which I will definitely be buying once I finish 'All the Bright Places' (a favourite of Zoe's, so I'm definitely going to trust her judgement!).

Have you read 'Girl Online'? What did you think of it?

Until next time.

Spa Day

Hello everyone!

As a treat yesterday, my mam and I went to a spa! We've both been extremely stressed out (her with work, me with college) so we decided that we needed to just relax and spend the day together with no worries. We went to the Pillo Hotel & Spa in Galway for a full body masssage, a head massage (which was AMAZING!!) and some time in the thermal suite. It was such a nice way to unwind and forget about our worries for a few hours. Part of the deal included cocktails after, which I definitely didn't object to!
Enjoy these photos I took of the beautiful spa!

Until next time.

How to: Caramel Cupcakes!!

Hello everyone!

This evening, I went baking! This is the first time I've made something from my head (if that makes sense) and not from a book so I decided to share it with you all.

These caramel cupcakes are just delicious and I am so happy that I decided to experiment with baking this evening instead of just making regular vanilla cupcakes!

Here is everything you will need!!
Ingredients:
Cupcakes:
120g baking butter
120g sugar
120g self-raising flour
Teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
Caramel flavouring
Icing:
100g butter
200g icing sugar
Tin condensed milk
2 dessert spoons double cream
Caramel flavouring
Chopped toffee pieces

To start with, I preheated the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (fan-oven) and put cupcake cases into my bun tin. I used these cute little yellow cases.

Then, it was time to start baking!! First, I creamed together the butter and sugar. I beat them on high speed until it looked light and creamy.

I then started alternating the sifted flour and eggs (which I cracked into a jug to avoid shells getting into the mixture) into my butter and sugar. Once everything was mixed together, I added 2-3 caps of the caramel flavouring. I had to taste the batter to make sure it was the right flavour I wanted (it was also an excuse to eat some cake batter!!) so just keep adding the flavouring to taste. I gave the batter another good mix on the high speed setting.

Using an ice-cream scoop, I filled up the cases and popped them into the oven for 12-15 mins. When they were done, I took them out of the bun tin and on to a wire tray to cool down.

While the cupcakes were cooling, it was time to make the caramel for the icing. I'm not too sure if I would use this method again, but I wouldn't say no to it if I needed to make caramel quickly.
I poured the tin of condensed milk into a saucepan and brought it to the boil, stirring occasionally with a whisk. It took a while for this to start bubbling, but once it does it doesn't stop!! Once it was brought to the boil, I added a small bit of butter, the double cream and caramel flavouring.
To make the butter icing, you can use whatever recipe you usually use. For me, I just mixed the butter until it was nice and soft, then sifted in half of the icing sugar, mixed, and then added the remaining icing sugar (sifted!).
And now it's time to make this caramel butter icing!! It's simple, just add half of your cooled caramel mixture to the butter icing and mix well. If you want a bit more flavour (like me!) add some more of that caramel flavouring.
I didn't use a piping bag for the icing for these cupcakes as the icing was very sweet and I didn't want too much. Instead, I used a knife to spread it on. I love the rustic look this technique gave the cupcakes. I put three little pieces of chopped toffee on top and these cupcakes were ready to serve!!

And there we have it! Caramel cupcakes with caramel butter icing, perfect with a cup of tea on these cold Autumn evenings. If you make these cupcakes, post a photo on Instagram and be sure to tag me (link below) and use the hashtag #BakingWithFifs!

Until next time.

Pamper Evening

Hello everyone!

Yesterday evening, I decided to have a bit of a pamper night. I was very tired from travelling home from Dublin and pamper evenings always make me feel better. I had also bought a few new products in Dublin that I wanted to try out, so I used this as an excuse!!

So to start off with, I removed my makeup because it had been on since eleven o'clock that morning and between travelling and sleeping on a hot bus, it was starting to feel disgusting! To do this I used my trusty Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water. I just popped some on to a cotton pad and wiped it all over my face. I then saw that Mam had bought some Cleansing Milk in Lidl, so I decided to try this to make sure everything was removed. I found it worked really well, except for the stinging of my eyes which I then had to splash some cold water on to.... Whoops...

A pamper evening is never complete without a bath! In my bath, I used the Zoella Fresh Fizz Bath Bomb (from her new collection) and I also added some of the Zoella Foam Sweet Foam Shower Gel to add bubbles. You could say I had  a Zoella bath! I also threw in a handful of Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender. When the temperature was right, I hopped in and started to relax.

I always have to play music when I'm in the shower or the bath. My music choice these days is my Troye Sivan playlist on Spotify! Basically, I just have Trxye and Wild in one place to create a magical playlist!! I'm in love with this guy and his music right now! So proud of our little Troye <3

I did all the usual stuff in the bath - wash my hair, exfoliate etc. I also washed my face with my Clean & Clear Exfoliating Daily Wash and then applied my new Lush Mask of Magnaminty. I'm absolutely loving this facemask at the moment and I'm definitely seeing some improvements to my face when I use it!

For some reason, I feel extra good after I shave my legs. I'm not the type of person that stops shaving once Autumn/Winter comes around because I just feel more confident knowing that I have smooth legs, even if they're not on show. So of course, that's what I did next! Nothing special with this process, just your usual shaving cream and razor.

Once I was out of the bath, I dried off and moisturised. I used (surprise, surprise!) the Zoella Candy Cream Body Lotion. This stuff just smells amazing and it leaves your skin feeling so soft and fresh! Even this morning, I can still feel the softness it left behind!!

Usually, I just let my hair dry naturally, but last night I decided to blow dry it as it was quite late and I hate going to bed with wet hair! So that's exactly what I did. I used my Nicky Clarke hairdryer (it's pink!!) to dry my hair roughly, nothing too fancy for that hour of the night.

Pyjamas were next on the agenda. I put on a pair of fluffy pyjama bottoms and a string top. I know, strange combination... I put a jumper on over the top to keep me nice and warm. Fluffy socks were also a must!

I painted my nails using the Wet n Wild MegaLast Nail Colour in Through the Grapevine. There's just something about painting your nails that makes you feel special!

I then had some chill time and laptop time in the sitting room. With tumblr on my laptop and Great British Bake-off on the television, I felt very relaxed. However, I soon decided to go down to bed. So I made myself a hot chocolate in my favourite Frozen mug, and hopped into bed to watch some YouTube before going to sleep.

And that was that!
I always love when I have one of these pamper evenings. I've been feeling very stressed lately so I really needed an evening like this where I could just look after myself and relax.

What do you do for a pamper evening?

Until next time.
